Tere Ishq Nachaya | Bulleh Shah

Kalam Baba Bulleh Shah. English translation by Kartar Singh Duggal.

Tere Ishq Nachaya Kar Key Thaiya Thaiya

Your Love Has Made Me Dance Like Mad

tere ishq nachaya

Tere Ishq nachaiyaan kar key thaiyaa thaiyaa
Your love has made me dance like mad

Tere Ishq ne dera mere andar keeta
Bhar ke zeher payala main taan aape peeta,
Jhabde wahudi tabiba nahin te main mar gaiyaan
Tere Ishq nachaiyaan kar key thaiyaa thaiyaa

Falling in love with you
Was like taking a sip of poison
Come my healer, forsaken, I am sad.
Your love has made me dance like mad

Chupp giyah ve suraj bahar reh gayi laali
Ve main sadqey hova, Devein murrjey wikhali
Peera main bhul gaiyaan tere naal na gaiyaan
Tere Ishq nachaiyaan kar key thaiyaa thaiyaa

The sun has set, its flush only is left
I’ll give my life for a glimpse of you
My fault I came not when when you bade
Your love has made me dance like mad.

Ais Ishq de kolon mainu hatak na maaye
Laahu jaandre berrey kehrramorlaya
Meri aqal jun bhulli naal mhaniyaan dey gaiyaan
Tere Ishq nachaiyaan kar key thaiyaa thaiyaa

Dissuade me not from the path of love
Who can hold the boats on the move?
Stupid, I joined the boatman’s squad
Your love has made me dance like mad

Ais Ishq Di Jhangi Wich Mor Bulenda
Sanu Qibla Ton Qaaba Sohna Yaar Disenda
Saanu Ghayal Karke Pher Khabar Na Laaiyaan
Tere Ishq nachaiyaan kar key thaiyaa thaiyaa

A peacock calls in the grove of passion
It’s Qibla, It’s Kaaba where lives my love
You asked not once after you stabbed
Your love has made me dance like mad

Bullah Shah na aounda mainu Inayat de buhe
Jisne mainu awaye chole saave te suhe
Jaan main maari aye addi mil paya hai vahaiya
Tere Ishq nachaiyaan kar key thaiyaa thaiyaa

Bulleh Shah Sits at Inayat’s door
Who has dressed me in green and red
And caught me the instant I flew from the pad
Your love has made me dance like mad

1) Saaqi ki har nigah pe bal kha ke pe gayaa
2) Lehron se khelta hoa lehra ke pe gayaa

In awe of every glance of the cup-bearer, I drank
I drank playing with the waves of joy.

3) Ay rahmat-e-tamam meri har khata maaf
4) Main intiha-e-shauq men ghabra ke pe gayaa

O all-merciful! Please forgive all my wrongs
I drank confounded by the extreme desire.

5) Peta baghair izn ye kab thi meri majaal
6) Dar-pardaa chashm-e-yaar ki shah pa ke pe gayaa

I do not dare to drink without permission
but the patronage of veiled eyes of my beloved beckoned.

7) Zahid ye meri shohi-e-rinda na dekhnaa
8 ) Rrahmat ko baaton baaton main bahla ke pe gayaa

O abstinent! Look at the mischievousness of my drinking
I drank by befriending the forgiveness [of God].

9) Uddi uddi ghataien aati hain
10)Mutribon ke navaien aati hain

Purple clouds are over-cast
and the sound of music is all around.

11) Kis ke gesu khule hain savan mai
12) Mahki mahki havaien ati hain

Whose tresses are open in the rains?
The winds are perfumed.

13) Ao sah’n-e-chaman main raqs karain
14) Saaz lekar ghaataien ati hain

Let us dance in the garden courtyard
the clouds brought music [with them].

15) Dekh kar unki ankhrriyon ko “Adam”
16) Maikadon ko havaien aati hain

After seeing her eyes O Adam!
I can feel the ambience of tavern.

17) Pass rahtaa hai dur rahta hai
18 ) Koi dil main zarur rahta hai

Near and far, somebody lives
somebody do lives in my heart.

19) Jab se dekha hai unki ankhon ko
20) Hhalkaa halkaa suroor rahta hai

From the time I have seen her eyes
I remain mildly intoxicated.

21) Aise rehte hain vo mere dil main
22) Jaise zulmat main noor rahta hai

My beloved lives in my heart, like
light lives in darkness.

23) Ab “Adam” kaa vo haal hai har qadam
24) Mast rahta hai chur rahta hai

“Adam” is of such a disposition that at every step
he remains intoxicated and ecstatic.

25) Ye jo halka halka suroor hai
26) Ye teri nazar ka qasoor hai
27) Ke sharab pena sikha diya

This mild intoxication
is because of your eyes,
that taught me drinking.

28 ) Tere pyar ne teri chaah ne
29) Tteri behki behki nigaah ne
30) Mujhe ek sharabi bana diyaa

Your love and your longing,
your intoxicating glances
made me a drunkard.

31) Sharab kaisi, Khumaar kaisa
32) Ye sab tumhari navazishen hain
33) Pilayi hai kis nazar se tu ne
34) Ke mujh ko apni khabar nahin hai

What wine, what intoxication
all this is [due to] your kindness.
You served me [wine] with your eyes such
that I have forgotten myself.

35) Sara Jahan mast, Jahan ka nizam mast
36) Din mast, Raat mast, Seher mast, Shaam mast
37) Mast shisha, Mast subu, Mast jaam mast
38 ) Hai teri chashm-e-mast se har Khas-o-am mast

The whole world is ecstatic, the order of the world is ecstatic.
The day is ecstatic, so is dawn and so is evening.
The glass, cup and wine are all ecstatic.
Because of your intoxicating eyes, everyone and everything is ecstatic.

39) Ye jo saaqi har tarah ki tere may-khane main hai
40) Wo bhi thorri si jo in ankhon ke paimane main hai

Of all the wines you have in your tavern
serve me a little from your eyes.

41) Sab samajhta hun teri ish nazar ai saaqi
42) Kaam karti hai nazar, naam hai paimane ka

43) Teraa pyar hai bas meri zindagi

I understand your alluring glances
that cause intoxication, instead of wine.

Only your love is my life.

44) Na namaz ati hai mujhko na vuzu ata hai
45) Sajdaa kar leta hun jab samne tu ata hai

Neither I know prayers nor ablutions,
I prostate whenever you come in front of me.

46) Main azal se banda-e-ishq hun
47) Mujhe zuhd-o-kufr ka gham nahin
48 ) Mere sar ko dar tera mil gayaa
49) Mujhe ab talash-e-haram nahin

I am a follower of love since the beginning of life
[and] I do not care for piousness or irreligiousness.
My head has found your house,
now I do not search for the mosque.

50) Meri bandagi hai vo bandagi
51) Jo baqaid-e-dair-o-haram nahin
52) Mera ek nazar tumhain dekhna
53) Ba-Khuda namaz se kam nahin

54) Tera pyar hai bas meri zindagi

My devotion is such devotion
that is not bound by the mosque and the temple.
When I see you once
by God, it is no less than a prayer.

Only your love is my life.

55) Qayamat main tera dagh-e-muhabat lekar uthaungaa
56) Teri tasvir us dam bhi kaleje se lagi hogi

… Kyunkey,
57) Tera pyar hai bas meri zindagi

On the day of judgment, I would rise with the scars of your love
your image would be clinging to my heart on that day.

because
Only your love is my life.

58 ) Teri yaad hai meri bandagi
59) Jo teri khushi, wo meri khushi
60) Ye mere junoon ka hai mojizaa
61) Jahaan apne sar ko jhuka diyaa
62) Vahan main ne Kaaba bana diyaa

63) Mere baad kisko sataaoge?

Your remembrance is my prayer
[and] your wish is my wish.
This is the miracle of my frenzy
that where ever I prostrated
a mosque was made there.

On whom would you inflict pain after me?

64) Dil jalon se dil lagi achi nahin
65) Rrone Walon se hansi achi nahin
66) Dil lagi hi dil lagi main dil gaya

67) O mera dil gaya, dil gaya, dil gayaa

It is not nice to play with the emotions of sufferers,
it is not good to laugh at the mourners.
I lost my heart in [just in] play.

O my heart is gone!

68 ) Khuda ke liye apni nazron ko roko warna
69) Mera dil gaya, dil gaya, dil gayaa

For God’s sake change your glances, else
my heart is gone.

70) Meri tarah Khuda kare tera kisi pe aye dil
71) Tu bhi kaleja tham ke kahta phire ke haye dil

72) Mera dil gaya, dil gaya, dil gayaa

I pray to God that you also fall in love with someone
and suffer in separation with hands on your heart.

My heart is gone.

73) Dil lagi hi dil lagi main dil gayaa
74) Dil lagane ka nateja mil gayaa
75) Main to rota hoon ke mera dil gayaa
76) Tum kyun hanste ho tumhain kya mil gayaa?

I lost my heart just in fun
and got the measure of falling in love.
I cry because my heart is lost
[but] why do you laugh, what did you get?

… Achaa phir
78 ) Mere baad kisko sataogey?
79) Mujhe kis tarah se mitaogey?
80) Kahaan jaa kar teer chalaaogey?
81) Meri dosti ki balayain lo
82) Mujhe hath utha kar duaain do
83) Tumhain ek qatil bana diyaa

Okay then…..
To whom would you inflict pain after me?
How would you take me out of your life?
Where would you cast those arrow-like glances?
Value my friendship
[that] helped you to gain murderous charm.

84) Mujhe dekho khwaish-e-jaan-e-jaan
85) Main wohi hun “Anwar”-e-nim jaan
86) Tumhain itnaa hosh tha jab kahaan
87) Na chalao is tarah tum zubaan
88 )Karo mera shukriya mehrbaan
89) Tumhain baat karna sikha diyaa

Watch me, O my desire of life!
I am the same suffering “Anwar”
You were not even in your senses at that time
[so] don’t argue with me in such a manner
[but] offer thanks to me
that I helped you articulate yourself.

Note: Anwar is the name of the poet.

90) Ye jo halka halka suroor hai
91) Ye teri nazar kaa qusoor hai
92) Ke sharab pena sikha diyaa

This mild intoxication
is because of your eyes,
that taught me drinking.
